Coeliac Disease

What is Coeliac Disease?

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disease where the protein, gluten damages the surface of the small intestine (the villi and microvilli). This can cause malabsorption of nutrients such as vitamin D, calcium, folate, iron and B12 and health impacts such as changes in bowel function and tiredness.

What is the treatment for Coeliac disease?

The only treatment for Coeliac Disease is a lifelong, strict gluten-free diet (wheat, barley and rye). Obvious sources of gluten in breads, pizza bases, pastry, cakes, muffins, crackers and biscuits, breakfast cereals and general flours need to be avoided. Small amounts hidden in many processed foods are also unsuitable. Gluten free cereal alternatives need to used such as arrowroot, buckwheat, corn or maize, lupin, millet, modified maize starch, polenta, psyllium, rice, sago, sorghum, soy and tapioca.

How can we help?

Once you have been diagnosed with Coeliac Disease we will help you understand more about the condition, which foods need to be avoided and which can be eaten safely. We will help you read labels for gluten and to plan and enjoy lifelong gluten free eating.
