Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

IBS affects 15-20% of the population and is more common in woman. Symptoms can include bloating, pain, gas and altered bowel symptoms and nausea. A family history of IBS, gut infections or surgery; stress, anxiety or depression; and antibiotics are all possible triggers of IBS. Changes in the gut sensation, motility, microflora (bacteria) or interactions with the brain may underly these symptoms. However, in many cases the cause is unknown.

How is IBS managed?

Medication, psychological approaches and diet all play a part in the management of IBS.

How can we help?

We will help with the diet management of IBS. We will assess your eating and lifestyle patterns and make a plan to reduce your symptoms. This may include diet routine, modifying your fibre intake or starting a low FODMAP (or fermentable carbohydrates) diet for a 2-6 weeks. If needed we can support re-challenging FODMAPs to help identify your specific food triggers and diversify your diet to maintain long term gut health. We can also talk about the value of pre and probiotics and fermented foods such as kimchi, kefir, unpasteurised sauerkraut.
